Health insurance for Illinois consultants who travel, when the marketplace PPO costs much more

The answer, briefly: Illinois offers a PPO through Get Covered Illinois statewide, but it generally costs around 57% more than the lowest-priced silver option. Recently left your employer? Compare Illinois continuation before your 60 days expire. If you qualify for credits, marketplace coverage usually costs less. If your income exceeds the cutoff and you're healthy, consider pricing medically underwritten coverage with a nationwide PPO.

Maybe you recently left a consulting firm, or you've always worked for yourself. Either way, you're invoicing clients directly. Your assignments might take you to Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta or another city, spending Monday through Thursday at the client's location. You need insurance that still makes sense when you're only sleeping in Illinois three nights each week.

The process for buying coverage in Illinois changed for 2026. Instead of HealthCare.gov, residents now use the state's marketplace, Get Covered Illinois. PPO coverage is available there statewide. The state insurance department identifies a single insurer offering a PPO throughout Illinois's 13 rating areas, while CMS enrollment data shows availability across all 102 counties.

The catch is what you'll pay. Looking at each rating area for a 40-year-old before credits, the insurer's lowest-priced silver PPO averages roughly 57% more than the least expensive silver coverage from any company. Depending on location, that difference ranges from approximately 14% to 115%. Compared with that insurer's own cheaper silver offerings, the PPO averages about 55% higher. Those figures reflect federal plan records, not personalized county quotes.

Your first decision comes down to whether you've recently lost employer health benefits and whether your consulting earnings put you within the tax credit range.

If you just left a firm to consult on your own

Illinois has more generous continuation provisions than many other states. Fully insured employer group coverage is included regardless of company size. If you were enrolled for at least three consecutive months, you can generally continue that coverage for as long as 12 months. You'll typically cover the entire premium yourself, but you can keep seeing your existing doctors.

When employer coverage ends, you also have 60 days to enroll through Get Covered Illinois. Don't expect to bridge the gap with short-term insurance, because Illinois stopped allowing those policies to be sold in 2025. Your options are continuing the employer plan, choosing marketplace coverage or, if you're healthy and above the credit cutoff, applying for an underwritten policy. Make that choice before your 60-day opportunity expires.

Next, make your choice while you're still eligible to enroll. Sam Jaber can compare Illinois continuation, marketplace coverage and an underwritten plan together. Reach Sam Jaber by phone at 813-999-0101.

If your consulting income qualifies for a credit

If your earnings fall within the federal subsidy limits, Get Covered Illinois generally provides the lowest-cost option for consultants. That's because tax credits cannot be applied outside marketplace coverage. For 2027 policies selected during open enrollment starting November 1, an individual's credit eligibility ends above $63,840, compared with $62,600 for 2026. Both thresholds represent 400% of the federal poverty level.

Keep two Illinois factors in mind. First, published reports on the state's 2026 rate structure describe an extra load on silver premiums, potentially making gold cheaper when cost-sharing reductions aren't available. Second, consulting payments can fluctuate sharply between engagements. Update your Get Covered Illinois income projection whenever a significant contract begins or finishes. Your credit gets reconciled at tax filing, and in 2026 you could owe back the entire excess amount.

While traveling, your HMO or point-of-service coverage must still cover a legitimate emergency at an out-of-network hospital using in-network cost sharing, without advance authorization. For ordinary appointments, you'll generally need to wait until you're back in Illinois.

Next, verify your projected income and compare metal levels. Sam Jaber can determine whether gold or silver makes more financial sense. Call Sam Jaber directly at 813-999-0101.

If you bill too much for a credit

Once your income exceeds $63,840 as an individual, there's no subsidy reducing your premium. Illinois approved a weighted average increase of approximately 28.8% for 2026. Its unsubsidized PPO also typically costs roughly 57% more than the lowest-priced silver coverage. That's a substantial expense for someone spending most working weeks at client locations outside Illinois.

Choices are limited across much of Illinois, too. According to the insurance department, the PPO carrier is the only company serving every county and the sole marketplace insurer in 63 counties. Another two of the seven participating insurers will exit after 2026. In those 63 counties, paying full price means selecting between plans from just one company. That brings us to your medical history.

If you're healthy, over the line, and work out of state

For consultants in good health who earn beyond the subsidy cutoff, I'd also get prices for private, medically underwritten coverage outside Get Covered Illinois. These plans can use PPO networks throughout the country, and their premiums aren't tied to the price of Illinois's marketplace PPO.

Next, compare a national PPO quote with Get Covered Illinois. Sam Jaber can price both options, and the online questionnaire doesn't request medical details. Call Sam Jaber directly at 813-999-0101.

If you're managing a health condition

Having someone in your household with a medical condition doesn't automatically eliminate private coverage from consideration. The specific circumstances matter. Before you decide, Sam Jaber can review how both routes would work for your family.

I'd include Illinois's marketplace PPO in the comparison. It's available throughout the state and accepts applicants regardless of health. Its higher premium compared with the same insurer's HMO buys access to a broader network. Check whether your specialists participate, then compare it with a private PPO.

Consultant questions

Does Illinois still use HealthCare.gov?

No. Illinois replaced HealthCare.gov with Get Covered Illinois, its own state marketplace, for 2026. Illinois residents now use that platform to enroll and receive applicable tax credits.

Are there PPO plans on Get Covered Illinois?

Yes. For 2026, one insurer provides PPO medical coverage across all 13 Illinois rating areas. Comparing rates for a 40-year-old without credits in each rating area, its lowest-priced silver PPO typically runs about 57% above the least expensive silver alternative, with the difference exceeding double in the highest-cost area.

Can I buy a short-term health plan in Illinois between engagements?

No. Sales of short-term medical policies stopped in Illinois beginning in 2025. After employer insurance ends, Get Covered Illinois gives you 60 days to enroll. State continuation rules may also allow you to retain a fully insured workplace plan for as long as 12 months.

Private health insurance vs marketplace: which is better for a consultant?

Your income and health determine the better route. With an available tax credit, marketplace insurance generally offers the lower premium. If you're healthy but earn above the subsidy threshold, compare private medically underwritten coverage using a nationwide PPO with the unsubsidized Get Covered Illinois price.
